Flood relief in the Philippines

Jeff Anderson writes, “A couple of weeks ago Metro Manila and surrounding provinces were hammered by five days of heavy monsoon rain resulting in 60% of Metro Manila and 70% of central Luzon being swamped. Over 1.75 million people were severely affected and more than 500,000 people were staying in evacuation centers. ACTION’s Street Impact Team has been flooded with requests for help from pastors in our network.

“Street Impact Team recently conducted three flood relief operations. Each outreach was in partnership with churches we work with year-round. The Armed Forces of Philippines helped at one of the relief operations by providing security, logistical support, and free haircuts.

“We gave 350 relief packs to families. The packs contained 14 food items; this was much appreciated because people have little to eat since the floods kept them from working. Many families stayed in evacuation centers for a week during the height of the storms, but are now home cleaning up the mess left behind by receding flood water. After these relief efforts, our disaster relief account was depleted, but we have recently received additional donations from the United Kingdom, Canada, the United States, and the Philippines. We will continue helping people as funds allow.”
